The science behind essential oils and other natural remedies fascinates me. So I was excited when I saw the headline of an article published on PubMed about one of doTerra's oil blends. Researchers from the University of Oklahoma studied the OnGuard™ essential oil mix and it's ability to thwart the flu virus, or influenza. What the researchers found was that OnGuard seemed to weaken the influenza virus and reduce it's ability to infect others by interfering with the production of certain viral proteins. It did so in a dose-dependent manner, which means the higher dose the researchers applied, the more it weakened the virus.

Why Essential Oils are Essential to Me
Essential oils have been a part of my life since I first met my wife Heidi. She used them frequently to keep her beautiful dreadlocks healthy. In particular, she used lavender and tea tree oil to keep her hair clean. Those aromas were so exhilarating that I became attached to them in association with Heidi. So you could say I've had a love affair with essential oils (and my wife!) for over 14 years!
Yet the more I learned about and experienced essential oils, the more I became intrigued with their ability to provide healing. Heidi once used an alcohol extract of Myrrh oil soaked into cotton balls and packed next to one of her wisdom teeth that had become infected and was causing serious pain. We were visiting a friend in the North woods of Wisconsin and he had a really strong Myrrh tincture that healed one of his teeth. The side of Heidi's face where the tooth was infected was actually getting red and warm and she was slightly feverish. It was not a good situation and something needed to happen quickly.
Jim offered us the tincture and told us how to use it. So we packed the Myrrh oil onto the cotton balls and she stuffed them up next to her swollen gums. Within a day and a half the swelling was gone and she was totally healed. I was amazed at the power of this natural remedy. Myrrh is mentioned in the bible as being a special substance for incense and oil and I could see why!
Another amazing facet of essential oils that intrigued me (and still does!) was the modern use of essential oils in aromatherapy. Frankincense, Myrrh and Cedar incense always had a meditative, spiritually awakening quality on me when used as an incense. It turns out that frankincense is known to cross the blood-brain barrier, and it may be that this is the reason it is known to have the quality of enhancing spiritual focus. Today, we can use ultra-sonic essential oil diffusers to fill the spaces we're in with healing aromas.
More to come about the amazing qualities of essential oils in my next post!
